The Future of Curling in Windsor-Essex Facilitates an Open House Discussion of all Ice Users
The Future of Curling Windsor-Essex Committee held the open house and information session for all ice users in Windsor-Essex at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch on Howard Avenue. Between 40-50 people turned out on Tuesday, representing different affected user groups from curling to hockey to figure skating.
The Future of Curling Windsor-Essex Committee held the open house and information session for all ice users in Windsor-Essex at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch on Howard Avenue. Between 40-50 people turned out on Tuesday, representing different affected user groups from curling to hockey to figure skating.
Jim MacLachlan, president of the Windsor Curling Club Seniors Association and member of The Future of Curling in Windsor-Essex Committee, summed it up best:
"All ice users, not curling against the hockey people or the figure skating people. Because everybody's losing ice. If we lose ice and take theirs, then they're in the same boat we were. So we don't really want that. At the end of the day somebody's going to be very unhappy. If we end up at WFCU or Capri, that means we're pushing somebody out," he said.

“I would still like to see the option of keeping it at Roseland as a standalone building facility. That I think we can investigate further,” said Francis, who anticipates a report from administration by the end of the year."
“We'll wait to see what the final report says and then that's when we'll a final decision on the matter.”

Pointing to the many millions of dollars it would cost to either upgrade or replace the existing and rundown half-century-old facility, an administrative report is recommending Windsor’s curling community be relocated to the WFCU Centre. An existing community ice pad there — Cpl. A.P. Grenon Memorial Rink — is suggested to be converted into a permanent curling operation.

The mayor of Windsor feels city council will have to make a difficult decision when it comes to the future of curling at Roseland Golf and Curling Club.

"Council will have to make that decision at our next meeting and I'm sure it will be a very vibrant debate as there always is but I look forward to being able to work with everyone to find a good outcomes there," says Dilkens.

Report Recommends Moving Curling from Roseland to WFCU Centre
A report going to the Aug. 8 meeting of city council states that it is "not financially feasible" to continue curling at Roseland beyond the 2023-2024 season. Based on available information and the condition of the existing facility at Roseland there is a strong likelihood for large emergency capital repairs in both the existing clubhouse and the aging curling rink within the next few years, or sooner.

Peiling Huang, the Riverside Skating Club (RSC) president, says she's concerned with the City of Windsor's recommendation to permanently relocate the Roseland curling club to the WFCU Centre's Grenon ice pad. She says it's their home rink and she's unsure what it would mean for their skaters.

Windsor News Today - Windsor contemplates future of curling at Roseland Golf and Curling Club
The recently announced city survey asks participants how long they’ve been curling and what location they would prefer if the city decides to move the facility. It lists four existing hockey arenas. The Future of Curling in Windsor Committee conducted it’s own survey last December identifying their important amenities of onsite parking, at least four sheets of high-quality ice surface, lounge space, a staffed bar, and enough space to host bonspiels. Almost half said they were not interested in playing at a hockey arena.
